Resources/Surveys & Feedback/Targeting a survey

Targeting a survey

Restrict a survey to the right visitors, devices, pages and times of day.

The Targeting tab decides who is eligible to see a survey. Display rules then decide when an eligible visitor actually gets asked.

Survey targeting tab

Leave a section empty to allow everything

Every section is a restriction, not a requirement. An empty Device section means all devices, not none. Only the sections you fill in narrow the audience, and all filled sections must match.

Audience

  • Visitor type — new or returning visitors.
  • Referrer contains — a substring match against the referring URL.
  • Campaign — matches the UTM campaign on the session, so you can survey one acquisition source at a time. See Campaigns & UTM.

Device

Device type, Browser and Operating system are multi-select. Selecting nothing in a list means that list places no restriction.

Pages

Add one or more URL rules to limit the survey to specific pages. With no rules the survey is eligible on every page the SDK runs on. Rules are evaluated in the visitor's browser against the current URL.

Time of day

Pick the days of the week and a From/To window. Useful for surveys that ask about support or delivery, where an answer taken outside business hours is misleading.

Targeting, triggers and integrations are shared by every variant of a survey — only the questions and design differ per variant.
